Artist's Comments

My mother-in-law commissioned a pair of fans from me after seeing the set I did for AB08. She only really had detailed ideas for one of the fans, which would be a gift for a friend. My husband came up with the theme for the other fan, seen here.

See, my in-laws are Texans, and my mother-in-law especially likes to show it. (You should see her Christmas tree.) So my husband suggested bluebonnets, which are the Texas state flower, and I thought of putting them against the Texas flag.

I never want to draw bluebonnets again.

I mentioned on the daisy fan's description that I don't like drawing overly complex things. Bluebonnets have a lot of blooms on each stem. It was rather difficult keeping track of what parts were blooms and what parts were the flag in the background. But I'm pleased with the overall result, and my mother-in-law loved it.

Rather than make a sculpey bead for this fan, my husband and I bought a small pack of star-shaped button embellishments at a craft store. I strung two of them onto the tassel string before tying it to the tassel itself, and while simple, I kind of like the result.

TD: mechanical pencil, Staedtler pens, and watercolors on a premade fan; DMC floss and two white star buttons. Approx. 6 hours.

Steal, and I sic all the Texan relatives on y'all.

This one is really pretty. Now you'll just have to make a really, really large one (since everything is big in Texas). ;)

lol. that's funny. its a really nice fan! btw, how long does it usually take you to make a fan? i forgot to ask that important question...

Depends on how complex it is. I usually post the time it takes to do each fan in the "TD" (Technical Details) section at the bottom of the description.

Breaking it down, I'd say about an hour or two to draw and ink the picture, and then anywhere from four to eight hours to paint, depending on how many layers of color I need to do. Tassels take about an hour to make and attach, give or take a bit.

oh, okay. sorry if mine is too complex though...:stupidme:

Oh, a kirin design would only be complex if I did a lot of fancy details in it. The sea dragon fan I posted recently is the only "complex" one I've done so far, so don't worry.
