Fullview please.

I bought twice as many fans for AB08 as I did for '07, because they sold so well at '07 and because my wonderful husband had bought me a set of watercolor paints and some paintbrushes so I could try painting the fans. In all, for my first experiment with watercolors since 5th grade or so, I'd have to say not too shabby. I went Googling for one or two tricks I could use to make things work better, and improvised the rest. Go me. :D

When choosing designs for this round of fans, I decided to do half plant-themed and half animal-themed, focusing more on beautiful (and at least somewhat Asian) flowers and doing more than just one dragon this time around. I did the koi again because they're nice and traditional, did another phoenix because it's just fun and beautiful, and looked up some other typical Asian creatures and animal designs to work with.

I also made sure to give the animals more dynamic poses (in most cases), and tried to use more of the fan so I had less blank space this time around, especially with the plant-themed designs. It was easier, since I didn't have to use colored pencils on them.

I priced the fans a little higher since they looked much better this time around, even though I had to do some minor glue-surgery to repair tears where the paper from this batched proved to be thinner than I remembered. On a small handful of fans, I had to glue some white paper to the back to reinforce where it tore along the edge during the erasing step, and one or two also needed parts re-glued in the front where erasing had pulled up the front layer of paper along the bamboo shafts. Luckily, all the minor tears seemed to recover with a bit of Mod Podge (note to self: next time, reseal the Mod Podge with acrylic or find a glue that gets a little less sticky in heat/humidity).

The fans sold quite well at the convention, and I remembered to arrange them in such a way this time that I got fewer people thinking they were just a decoration. I've heard at least two people remark that they still love their fans, and even sold one to a girl who had a rather warm costume so she could keep herself cool (we had to open all the fans to find the one best coordinated for her costume, and she actually sent one or two other people my way who saw her fan later).

The designs are as follows:

Row 1: gingko leaves, lotus and leaves, water dragon, fire dragon
Row 2: cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, shadow dragon, light dragon
Row 3: white lily, bamboo, dragon and tiger, earth dragon
Row 4: celosia flowers, azalea flowers, kitsune, phoenix
Row 5: Japanese maple leaves, gentian flowers, kirin, koi
Row 6: morning glories, calanthe orchids, cranes, butterflies

TD: mechanical pencil, Staedtler pens, and watercolor paints on pre-made bamboo fans. Approx. 4-5 hours per fan.

Steal, and I whap you with an oversized paper version of these.

now, i want to know. the kirin... is that actually a traditional mythical creature in asia? and where in asia? b/c i want it. how much?
:iconah-kaziya:
It is, actually. It's sort of the Asian unicorn. It's "kirin" in Japan, while I believe the common romanization of the word in China is qui-lin or quilin.

It's commonly depicted as a creature with the feet and head of a dear, the mane and tail of a lion, the horn of a stag (just one horn, like a unicorn), and the body of a horse. Some features change (I've heard the head described as "dragon" before), but those seem to be the basics. And they're supposed to be gentle and nonviolent, walking on rocks to avoid crushing grass even.

And if you're asking how much for the fans, unfortunately these are mostly sold out (I've got bamboo, earth dragon, and gingko left, and one of those is reserved), but I can take a commission to recreate one of them that you like. Someone else commissioned me to recreate the koi fan for them, actually. Just let me know if that's what you're asking.

cool! i thought it might be because i saw an anime called The Twelve Kingdoms and it has kirin as the basic animals there.

alright. i can commision. how much for it? and do i have to buy it off of an online store or something? idk if i can do that without permission of my parents... get back to me on that, though. okay? thanks for the reply! ^w^

The kirin is used by Kirin Corporation, too, as part of their logo.

Very nice work on all the fans. :)

I've seen (most of) The Twelve Kingdoms as well. Their kirin are based off of the traditional kirin. :)

You'll find commission information linked at the bottom of my latest journal entry. The kirin design would count as a simple design rather than complex (unless you add details to make it complex).

You don't need to buy it off an online store. You would buy it directly from me, and I can take PayPal or personal check/money order. You might still need to ask your parents, but it would be a one-on-one transaction, not a store transaction. No personal info or anything. Note me if you have more questions. :)

Probably because Kirin Corporation also took it from mythology. I'd forgotten about them, actually.

Thanks. ^_^ Hopefully I'll just keep getting better at them.

Wow! These are great! I'm sad I didn't see you at all, I would have pickd one up! Are you planning on selling them at AB '09 again? I collect fans, and one (or 3) of these would be a great addition to my collection. =)
Did you ever find a solution to a mechanical pencil for drawing on them without making holes every now and again? I may try my hand at doing a few for myself.
:iconah-kaziya:
Unfortunately, I won't be able to go to AB'09. :( I'm going to try for tables at ConnectiCon and Another Anime Con (in Nashua, NH), and you could always commission a fan. (*hint hint* ;)) Commission details are linked at the bottom of my latest journal entry.

Unfortunately, I haven't found anything I like drawing with better than my mechanical pencil, so I've just learned to draw really carefully. I suppose a slightly dulled regular pencil would work better, but I can't get as much detail out of that, and the lines tend to blur together for me.

Hmm, well I've decided I will try a few of my own. If I run into anything I like better than a mechanical pencil I'll let you know. ^^
And I'll definatly consider commissioning from you once I've recovered from the begining of term. AB is, unfortunatly, the only con I can manage this year. But I'll be in touch once I can get some money together! =)
